Remembering Debbie
The Debbie Blink Memorial Scholarship offers a performance scholarship to high school color guard members from Indiana who will be performing with a drum corps the summer following their graduation from high school. The monetary value and quantity of the scholarships will be based on available funding.
The scholarship is in remembrance of Debbie Blink. Debbie was introduced to color guard at a young age as she watched her older sisters’ color guard performances. Debbie was a member of the Yorktown High School Color Guard and went on to march in the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps. She returned to Yorktown High School as a color guard instructor. Debbie continued teaching and working with high school color guard and dance students and with several other organizations through the years.
Throughout her adulthood, Debbie continued to give back. She sponsored young adults who had the desire to march drum corps after high school by providing financial support to those that may not have been able to perform otherwise. She was a firm believer in the drum corps activity and the important life lessons and close personal bonds created in the color guard activity.
Debbie passed away December 24, 2014, after a courageous 3½ year battle with cancer. Her friends honor her memory with a scholarship to assist students continuing after high school in the color guard/drum corps activity. The scholarship has been funded through generous donations by friends, family and those who share Debbie’s passion for the activity.
Criteria for applicants:
- Commitment to march in a drum corps the entire summer following high school graduation.
- Reference letter from high school color guard director or band director.
- Confirmation of commitment from a drum corps director or color guard caption head.
- Student must write a 500-word essay about why they choose to march drum corps.
- Students must complete the online application.
