About Capital Wind Workshops
Since 2000, the Capital Wind Symphony has offered a unique educational opportunity to middle and high school wind bands visiting the Washington, D.C., region. These 90-minute workshops pair student musicians with members of one of the region’s premier community-based wind ensembles, led by a highly acclaimed conductor. Rather than observing from a distance, professional musicians sit alongside each section of the band, demonstrating proper performance concepts and modeling a professional standard of performance in real time.
Founded in 1990, the Capital Wind Symphony is one of the Washington, D.C., region’s premier community-based wind ensembles. Comprised of professional musicians, educators and advanced performers from across the DMV, the ensemble is dedicated to artistic excellence, innovative programming and meaningful community engagement. Under the leadership of Music and Artistic Director Dr. William L. Lake Jr., the group continues to expand the boundaries of the wind band experience through collaboration, education and bold musical storytelling.
What to Expect at Capital Wind Workshops
Capital Wind Workshops are designed to deliver a high-impact, student-centered clinic experience, including:
- Side-by-side coaching with professional musicians who sit within the ensemble and demonstrate proper performance concepts in real time.
- A hands-on clinic where a professional standard of performance is modeled for students as they play.
- Conductor-led rehearsal strategies that directors can immediately take back to their own ensembles.
- Development of ensemble listening skills, balance and blend, style and overall musicianship.
Directors can bring one or more selections they have already performed or are preparing for an upcoming concert, contest or festival. The workshop works beautifully at any point in the ensemble’s preparation, whether just beyond sight-reading or almost performance-ready. Students are often amazed at how quickly they mimic what they observe and hear.
Practice with the Pros
The “Practice with the Pros” workshops give student musicians the opportunity to rehearse, learn and grow alongside members of the Capital Wind Symphony. In these interactive sessions, students receive hands-on instruction, sectional coaching and real-world insight into professional-level musicianship, rehearsal techniques and performance preparation, all in a supportive and inspiring environment.
