Find out why Music Travel Consultants is the 1st choice in Portugal performance trips.
Portugal has so much to offer!
Portuguese influence during the Age of Discovery was the key to the opening of Brazil and Indonesia to Western civilization. Today’s Portugal is a delightful blend of yesterday and tomorrow, a sun-drenched, history-filled and most hospitable part of the Iberian peninsula. Portugal’s most notable contribution to music is Fado. Contact us today and begin planning life-long memories with unforgettable performances in Portugal.
For Your Students
Student groups traveling to Portugal perform in settings that span a thousand years of history, from Romanesque cathedrals and Gothic monasteries to modern concert halls in Lisbon and Porto. Between performances, students explore the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, the palaces of Sintra and the scenic Douro River, gaining a deeper appreciation for Portugal’s musical heritage and its warm hospitality.
Portugal Performance Trips for Bands, Choirs and Orchestras
Music Travel Consultants plans custom Portugal trips around your ensemble and educational goals. Portugal offers student ensembles an exceptional range of performance settings. Choirs sing in baroque churches such as the Clérigos Church in Porto and the Basilica of the Martyrs in Lisbon. Orchestras perform in the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival alongside young musicians from around the world. Bands and choirs alike find welcoming historic venues from the Algarve to Coimbra, and educational workshops are available through the World Choral Expo and the University of Coimbra.
Portugal Trip Options for Marching Bands
Marching bands will find that Portugal’s performance culture centers on concert and standstill settings rather than large parades. MTC can arrange joint performances and informal concerts with local Portuguese school bands, plus staged performances in parks and public squares. Directors should contact MTC early to discuss which options fit their ensemble best.
Portugal Trip Options for Bands
Concert bands perform in historic churches, monasteries and cultural centers across Portugal, including the Belém Cultural Center, the Coliseum of the Recreios and the Church of the Clérigos in Porto. Sacred venues typically request a varied program suitable for a worship or heritage setting, and MTC coordinates each booking with local parish and venue contacts.
Portugal Trip Options for Choirs
Choirs perform in some of Portugal’s most beautiful sacred spaces, including the Basilica of the Martyrs, the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon and the Cathedral of Porto. Choirs may also take part in the World Choral Expo’s Colorful Voices Workshops and EXchange! Sessions, which bring together choral singers from around the world for master classes and shared performances.
Portugal Trip Options for Orchestras
Orchestras can perform in the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival, which features youth orchestras, choirs and bands from around the world in venues across Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto. Additional options include the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium and the National Theatre of Saint Charles, subject to availability and advance application.

Portugal Student Music Trip FAQs
Answers to common questions about Portugal performance trips for student bands, choirs and orchestras, including performance options, applications, planning and costs.
What performance opportunities are available for student groups in Portugal?
Student bands, choirs and orchestras perform in historic churches, monasteries, palaces and concert halls across Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and the surrounding regions. Verified options include the Church of the Clérigos, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Cultural Center, the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium and the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival.
Can marching bands perform in Portugal parades?
Portugal does not currently host a large international parade for visiting student marching bands. Marching bands instead benefit from standstill concerts, joint performances with local school ensembles and staged performances in public squares, all arranged by Music Travel Consultants.
What can choirs do in Portugal?
Choirs perform in remarkable sacred spaces such as the Basilica of the Martyrs, the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon and the Cathedral of Porto. Choirs can also join the World Choral Expo’s Colorful Voices Workshops and EXchange! Sessions for master classes and collaborative performances with singers from around the world.
What can orchestras do in Portugal?
Orchestras can perform in the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival, which brings youth orchestras, choirs and bands from around the world to venues in Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto. Subject to availability and application, orchestras may also perform at the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium and the National Theatre of Saint Charles.
Can our school ensemble perform at a major venue in Portugal?
Yes. Major venues such as the Belém Cultural Center and the Coliseum of the Recreios host student ensembles, but each requires advance booking and approval. Acceptance depends on the ensemble, the proposed program and the venue calendar, and Music Travel Consultants manages the entire application process on your behalf.
Do Portugal performance opportunities require an audition or application?
Some do. The Lisbon International Youth Music Festival requires an application and may request audition materials, while churches and monasteries generally require advance booking through local contacts rather than formal auditions. Music Travel Consultants confirms each venue’s requirements before your itinerary is finalized.
Can our students participate in music workshops or clinics in Portugal?
Yes. The World Choral Expo offers EXchange! Sessions, Colorful Voices Workshops and master classes with international clinicians, and the University of Coimbra hosts educational music workshops for visiting student groups. Both options pair well with performances in the same itinerary.
How far in advance should we plan a Portugal music trip?
We recommend planning 12 to 18 months ahead, especially if your group wishes to perform in the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival or during peak spring travel season. Earlier planning gives your ensemble the widest choice of venues and workshop dates.
What affects the cost of a student music trip to Portugal?
Cost depends on group size, travel dates, trip length, the number of performances and workshop fees, plus airfare and exchange rates. Music Travel Consultants provides a detailed proposal tailored to your ensemble, and our Trip Account App helps families manage payments.
Can MTC combine performances, clinics and sightseeing in a Portugal itinerary?
Absolutely. A typical Portugal itinerary combines performances in Lisbon and Porto with workshops, guided visits to the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the palaces of Sintra, plus a Douro River cruise. Music Travel Consultants builds each itinerary around your ensemble’s musical and educational goals.
